TELLY TALK: Comedies, mysteries and thrillers

AIRING tonight at 10pm is Mistress America on Fox Movies Premium (Astro channel 413/ 433 HD). Directed by Noah Baumbach, this American comedy film stars Greta Gerwig and Lola Kirke, the latter a college freshman who is having trouble adjusting to college life at Barnard’s.

Kirke, who plays Tracy, eventually meets and befriends another college student Tony and they share many bittersweet memories together. But that changes one day when Tony begins dating another girl. On her mother’s advice, Tracy leaves Tony and gets in contact with her stepsister, Brooke (Gerwig), who is living in New York.

On Friday, catch Rocky Balboa in Rocky III at 10pm, followed by Rocky IV at 11.40pm. Written, directed and starring Sylvester Stallone, the movies also feature a returning cast of Carl Weathers, Burgess Meredith, Talia Shire and Burt Young. Three years after winning the world heavyweight title, Rocky Balboa has seen a steady rise of fame, wealth and his “celebrity status”. Rocky is publicly challenged by the ferocious boxer Clubber Lang. Lang accuses Rocky of intentionally picking his opponents to guarantee his success at the ring. Rocky’s trainer Mickey admits to have been a part of the setup and wants no involvement in his fights. Somehow Rocky manages to convince Mickey to stay.

The action continues in Dark Places, which comes on Saturday at 10pm. The mystery-thriller film directed by Gilles Paquet-Brenner is based on the novel of the same name by Gillian Flynn. It stars Charlize Theron, Christina Hendricks, Nicholas Hoult and Chloe Grace Moretz.

Set in a farming town in Kansas, the movie follows Libby Day, the only surviving witness of a horrific massacre. Believing the work of a Satanic cult, Libby is constantly being haunted by the gruesome violence. Years later, Libby joins The Kill Club, a club made up of amateur investigators, to investigate the massacre. By doing so, Libby is also unintentionally opening up old wounds.

Think you had a bad day, tune in to Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day on Sunday, 8pm and watch how 11-year-old Alexander Cooper deals with his own misfortune. Alexander’s day begins with a gum stuck in his hair. However, he finds little sympathy from his family and wonders if bad things ever happen to his family.

In The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day (Saturday at 11pm), the MacManus brothers have been living a quiet life with their father in Ireland when they learn that a priest is brutally killed by a gang member. Living Ireland, the brothers travel to Boston to seek justice and avenge the priest.

Then on Sunday, The Tourist comes on at 11pm. While on holiday in Europe, American tourist Frank meets the mysterious beauty, Elise. Unknown to Frank, beneath all that beauty and charm, lies a secret that will eventually put his life in danger.
