Report crimes in real-time to the police, via a new mobile app

KUCHING: The Home Ministry will introduce a number of initiatives to beef up security in the country and restore the people’s confidence, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.

Apart from stationing policemen at crime-prone areas, Zahid said the ministry will also launch a mobile application that will allow the public to report crime cases in real time.

“The app will involve around five million people registered via the National Blue Ocean Strategy scheme and it will be launched on Aug 16.

“This app will allow smartphone users to report crimes that occur before their eyes in real time to the police command centre, which in turn will deploy a team to scene to take necessary action.

“It will help to improve police’s delivery system and curb crimes,” Zahid told reporters after attending a Hari Raya open house hosted by Deputy Home Minister Masir Kujat here.

Zahid admitted that the spate of shooting cases, some of which involved members of underworld gangs, had affected the public’s confidence in the nation’s security.

To address this problem, Zahid said the ministry is also mulling re-branding the ongoing Op Cantas to Op Cantas 2.0 to better combat organised crime.

He did not elaborate on the new mechanism that would be introduced under Op Cantas 2.0.

“We will address all the issues. However, we also need the cooperation from the people in our bid to enhance safety in our country,” said Zahid.
