Government has no plan to extend retirement age

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has no plan to extend the retirement age of civil servants to 62 from the current 60, according to Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa.

He also described that the proposal made by the Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) pertaining to the matter as a premature proposal.

“We have taken note of the proposal, but it would be premature to talk about extending the retirement age.

“So, we will let the retirement age of 60 be in effect for a few more years,” he said in an interview with Bernama and RTM at Angkasapuri here today.

Cuepacs president Datuk Azih Muda had recently proposed that the government create a new policy to extend the retirement age of civil servants to 62 in preparation for the country to become a fully developed nation, saying that the move would also reduce the government’s expenses on pensions.

In 2012, the retirement age of civil servants was raised from 58 to 60.

Malaysia currently has 1.6 million civil servants, including those from the security and critical services. – BERNAMA
