Family, friends pay last respects to late Maybank Islamic chairman

KUALA LUMPUR: Family, friends and colleagues today paid their last respects to Maybank Islamic chairman Datuk Seri Ismail Shahudin, who was laid to rest at the Bukit Kiara Muslim cemetery at 2.45pm.

It was learnt Ismail died about 6.30am at the National Heart Institute here due to heart complications.

He was 65.

Ismail is survived by his wife and four children.

Ismail’s body was brought to the cemetery after prayers were conducted at the At-Taqwa Mosque, in Taman Tun Dr Ismail.

Also present at the funeral were Negri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and Maybank president and chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Farid Alias.

Ismail was a well-known figure in both the banking and political world, as he was appointed as member of the Perak senate on March 17, 2010.

He was appointed as a Director of Maybank on 15 July 2009, serving as Chairman of the Credit Review Committee and as a member of Risk Management Committee of the Board.

His directorships in companies within the Maybank Group include as Chairman of Maybank Islamic Berhad and as Director of MCB Bank Limited, Pakistan.

Prior to that, Ismail was the Chairman of Bank Muamalat Malaysia Berhad from 2004 until his retirement in July 2008.

He has held senior positions in Citibank, serving both in Malaysia and New York, United Asian Bank and Maybank where he was appointed Executive Director in 1997.

He left Maybank in 2002 to assume the position of Group Chief Executive Officer of MMC Corporation Berhad.

Ismail was also Chairman of Faber Group Berhad and a director of several public listed companies which including EP Manufacturing Berhad, Opus International Consultants Ltd, a company listed on New Zealand Stock Exchange and Aseana Properties Limited, a company listed on the London Stock Exchange.
