Malaysians take to the streets in search of elusive Pokemon

KUALA LUMPUR: The augmented reality game Pokemon Go is finally here after a month of Malaysian gamers being envious of Japan, Australia and New Zealand, who have had first dibs on the game first when it was rolled out.

Malaysians can now download the much awaited game, developed by Niantic, on both Google Play Store and Apple IOS store which already over 100 million downloads since its inception July 2016.

The game utilises mobile devices' GPS to locate and capture the Pokemon character.

Wan Ahmad Rafiq Danial, 17, from Kota Baru, Kelantan, who downloaded the app on his iphone 6s plus while being interviewed, said he was excited and had asked his sister to drive him around in his search for Pokemon.

"As soon as I downloaded the game, I caught a Charmander, and we had to park our car and walk around town to catch more on foot.

"I'll be sure to bring my power bank wherever I go in case my battery drains out while I'm out 'hunting'," said the boy who has already influenced his sister to download the app too.

Tommy Tan from Bandar Majalara, Kepong said he had previously downloaded the game before it was officially launched in Malaysia as he saw his tuition friends playing it during class.

"I was excited to play from the moment I saw my dad playing it on his phone. He managed to catch some rare Pokemon but so far there are a lot of Rattata and Magikarp," said the 14-year-old, who said his mother didn't like him spending too much time on the phone.

The game is a result of a collaboration between Niantic, Gaming giants Nintendo and the Pokemon Group.
