(Olympics) No cheer for diver Wendy, cyclist Fatehah

RIO DE JANEIRO: Wendy Ng Yan Yee admitted the occasion got to her as the diver finished 10th in the Rio Olympics 3m springboard final at the Maria Lenk Aquatic Centre on Sunday.

The Malaysian, who exceeded her personal target of making the semi-finals, scored a five-dive total of 306.60 points. Gold and silver were won by China's Shi Tingmao (406.05) and He Zi (387.90).

Icing on the cake for He Zi's silver medal was a poolside marriage proposal by her boyfriend after the medal ceremony.

Bronze went to Tani Cagnotto of Italy (372.80) and it was a medal Malaysia had hoped would be Wendy's.

"I got nervous. It is not an excuse but that is what happened. I am disappointed as I had hoped to perform much better.

"I had targeted the semi-final but having made the final, I had hoped to perform better but it was not to be," said Yan Yee, who had her family among her supporters.

While Yan Yee made the final, cyclist Fatehah Mustapa failed to advance to the first round of the sprint after finishing 21st in the qualifying.

Only the top 18 advanced and what made Fatehah's result even more disappointing was her time of 11.207s, as she had been set a target of clocking below 11 seconds.

Golfers Gavin Kyle Green and Danny Chia ended their campaign with just minimal improvement at the Olympic Golf Course.

Gavin had the best round of his campaign, carding three-under 68 for a 287 total to finish in 47th spot. Danny also had his best round, signing for a 69 for a 288 total for joint-48th.

The gold was won by Britain’s Justin Rose, whose 268 total saw him finishing two strokes ahead of silver medallist Henrik Stenson of Sweden. Bronze went to America’s Matt Kuchar, who was a stroke further adrift.
