MACC aims to be people-friendly, yet instill fear among the corrupt

KEPALA BATAS: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will adopt a people-friendly approach while at the same time instill fear among the corrupt.

In his inaugural working visit to Penang, newly-minted MACC chief commissioner Datuk Dzulkifli Ahmad said the people would be given access to the commission in efforts to fight corruption in the country.

"The issue of corruption is the people's issue...MACC will be together with the people to protect them against the corrupt.

"At the same time, we will also ensure that we are feared by the corrupt and fight corruption to the end," he said in his speech during a "Merakyatkan SPRM" programme at the Masjid Jamiul al-Badawi here tonight.

Dzulkifli, who is on his maiden visit to his hometown here after being made the chief commissioner, also assured those present that his door is always open to them.

"I will carry my responsibility to the best of my ability.

"I know it is not going to be easy and I hope I will get the support of all," he added.

Meanwhile, Dzulkifli was overcome by emotion when he spoke of his late father and the latter's reminder to him.

Earlier in a separate function, Dzulkifli witnessed the handing over ceremony of the new Penang MACC chief.

Datuk Abd Aziz Aban, who was the former Putrajaya MACC chief, will start his duty on Monday. He replaces Datuk Samarajoo Manikam who will retire on Sunday.

Aziz said he would continue Penang MACC's excellent performance with a focus on enforcement agencies, regulators, local authorities and government-linked companies.

"I will ensure that the Penang MACC and MACC as a whole will continue to gain the confidence of the people by increasing the initiative to approach them," he added.
