10 fishermen rescued after boat sinks off Labuan

LABUAN: Ten fishermen were rescued off Kampung Manikar, here after their boat sank this morning.

Nine of them were picked up by other fishermen in the area at 11.45am while the last person was later rescued by a team from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency.

Officials said the victims were found about 2.5km from Manikar beach. One of them was sent to Labuan Hospital for treatment.

Layangan Fire and Rescue Department chief Muhamad Azman Awang said they received a distress call at about 10.30am from a woman who was contacted by one of the victims.

“Those local fishermen, aged between 23 and 63, were believed to have gone further out to sea to fish.

“However, they were hit by strong wind and high waves. Their boat was believed to have taken water and sank," he said.
