Simple steps can save lives

CRIMES or any act of violence against children are every parents’ worst nightmare.

It’s sad to read reports on atrocities committed against children.

Just a few days ago, a report surfaced that the remains of a 5-year-old boy were found in undergrowth in Kampung Kemensah, Hulu Kelang, Selangor. The boy had been reported missing for a week.

Though the matter is still under investigation, it appears that the victim was first kidnapped and later murdered.

Then, there was the kidnapping of a schoolgirl, 11, in Miri, Sarawak. Luckily, the police managed to locate and rescue the victim.

There have been many similar cases of acts of violence against children in recent years, despite the government’s efforts to protect children with laws and strong enforcement.

The government has also recently amended the Child Act 2001 by gazetting the Child Act (Amendment) 2016 to include, among others, increasing the fine imposed and increasing the number of years for imprisonment for those convicted of crimes or any act of violence against children.

However, crimes against children are still being committed.

As such, it is crucial to explore other measures besides tougher legislation to deal with the issue.

One would be to create awareness among children themselves, as well as adults on steps to ensure the safety of children. Children in particular should be taught about all safety rules when they leave the house and if they are approached by strangers.

It is important to lay a solid foundation within the child and to inculcate self-confidence and strong self-esteem.

Children who are confident are less likely to become victims. Predators prefer to deal with shy and timid children who lack confidence.

Parents, guardians and teachers should educate children on how predators behave so they will know what to look out for when they meet strangers.

They also need to teach children to report any strange behaviour of a trusted adult to the authorities.

Children should also be taught to seek the help of someone they know, like teachers, guardians or even friends.

Also, inform children never to venture out alone. It is safer if they are in a group as this will usually intimidate predators.

These steps may seem simple but they could save their lives. Parents or guardians can also consider putting tracking devices on their children so they can be located easily.

It’s important to note is that wiser children are safer children. Teach them as soon as they are old enough to learn about safety.

Parents and guardians also need to be constantly alert about the safety of their children.

The whole community must work together to ensure the safety of children and put an end to any act of crime or violence towards children.

Communities, too, need to share their concerns and responsibilities regarding children’s safety.

Together, all of us can protect children from crimes or acts of violence.

Together, we can make a difference and our children can live in a safe environment.
