Islamic NGOs want removal of certain Ibn Taimiyyah's teachings in religious schools

PUTRAJAYA: Several Islamic non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have urged the Education Ministry to remove the syllabus containing the teachings of medieval Islamic scholar Ibn Taimiyyah from religious schools, claiming it could lead to Islamic State (IS) ideologies.

They also called on the government to ban the sale of books on Ibn Taimiyyah's teachings, saying that it was not in line with Sunnah Wal Jamaah teachings practiced by Muslims here.

Pahang mufti Datuk Seri Dr Abdul Rahman Osman said the syllabus on the three categories of tauhid; namely rububiyyah (lordship), uluhiyyah (worhip) and asma was sifat (names and attributes), taught in some religious schools (sekolah pondok) could sway the faith and lead to the ideology of extremism and bidaah (unacceptable religious practices).

"Those days, the older generation practiced the teachings of 20 atributes of Allah and had no knowledge of these three concepts. However, the teachings had slowly entered the country and accepted in some religious schools."

"Some of his teachings are good but there are also those that contradict the Shafie tradition. We need to stop this from further spreading to our students and the public." he said during a press conference on Malaysians Solidarity Reject Extremist and Daesh Ideologies event, today.

Other NGOs supporting the removal included Malaysian Consultative Council for Islamic Organisation, Malaysian Muslim Youth, ARG Group Corporation, Ar-Rifaie Islamic Schools

and Association of Moral Development and Human Capital.

Present were former Federal Territory Mufti Datuk Wan Zahid Wan Teh; Ar-Rifaie Islamic School principal Ahmad Hafiz Mohd Alwi; Luqmanulhakim Bandar Tasik Puteri Tahfiz school principal Mahfuz Muhammad and former army officer who were detained under internal security act (ISA) in 2003, Abdul Manaf Kasmuri.
