Mah to tackle Gerakan's internal crisis

IPOH: Gerakan president Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong said he would hold a closed-door meeting with the party ledership in Penang next month, to help resolve an internal crisis brewing in the state.

Mah said he would meet them on Sunday (Sept 4) to find an amicable solution and stop the issue from prolonging and being exploited by others.

"For me, the problem is not that serious. Gerakan members are like a family and I think the "quarrel" among family members can be solved," he said after opening Perak Gerakan Liaison Committee, Youth and Wanita annual delegates' conference here today.

He said Gerakan members cannot afford to fight among themselves and must reunite to face the challenges ahead.

The crisis unfolded when the party deputy secretary-general, Dr Thor Teong Gee, resigned from all party posts on Aug 18.

He claimed that his reputation was smeared following claims that he had interfered in the candidate listing under the Jelutong parliamentary constituency in the last general election and did not attend programmes and meetings after that.

Dr Thor has been a Gerakan member since 2000 and served as the deputy secretary-general since 2013.

He contested the Jelutong parliamentary seat in 2008 and Sungai Pinang state seat in 2013 but lost in both attempts.

Mah also warned the DAP not to take advantage of the situation as the party did not do much the people in the constituency.

On the proposed amendment of the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act 1976, Mah said Gerakan welcomed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's effort to address the religious conversion issue.
