Thousands gather for Merdeka celebration in Penang

GEORGE TOWN: Thousands of Penangites packed the Esplande today to celebrate the state-level Merdeka celebration.

It was a sea of Jalur Gemilang in various sizes waving above the crowd as well as some 5,700 participants who took part in the parade.

Spectators arrived at Lebuh Light and lined up along the streets to witness the parade under cloudy skies.

Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas and his consort Toh Puan Majimor Shariff graced the colourful event upon arrival at 9am.

The parade started with the hoisting of the national flag and singing the national anthem. It was later followed by a choir performance from SMK Bukit Jambul.

The group mesmerised the crowd with two patriotic songs, "Sehati Sejiwa" and "Tanggal 31 Ogos".

During the event, Abdul Rahman saluted and waved at the participants marching passed the main stage.

Among the 104 contingents taking part in the parade included public sector, private sector, non-governmental organisations, higher education and training institutions as well as school uniformed bodies.

Also present were Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and the state government officials.

The parade ended at 11am.
