Alias Ahmad is new Education Ministry sec-gen

PUTRAJAYA: National Security Council (NSC) secretary Datuk Seri Alias Ahmad has been appointed as the new Education Ministry secretary-general effective tomorrow.

Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Ali Hamsa, in a statement, announced that 58-year-old Alias would take over from Tan Sri Dr Madinah Mohamad who have reached mandatory retirement.

Alias, who holds a Masters in Strategic Studies and Defence and a Master of Arts degree from Universiti Malaya, joined the civil service as an administrative and diplomatic service officer on Jan 9, 1984.

"He has vast experience in the field of planning, research and policy, human resource management and security through the various positions he helmed in the service for over 32 years," Ali said.

Among his past positions were Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism secretary-general and Immigration Department director-general.

"With his knowledge, experience and credibility, it is hoped that he could carry out his responsibilities effectively in line with Education Ministry's mission to develop quality education system in the country," Ali said.

"At the same time, on the behalf of the government, I would like to express my highest gratitude to Madinah for her contribution and service in the public service for more than 35 years.
