A good call: Malaysians can replace their Samsung Galaxy Note 7

KUALA LUMPUR: It’s not the end of the world for Malaysian owners of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7. The good news is, those who have already purchased the recalled device now have the option of replacing it with a new one.

In a statement today, Samsung Malaysia Electronics said customers who wish to do so can contact the Samsung Malaysia Careline at 1-800-88-7799 for further enquiries on their current Galaxy Note 7 device before replacement takes place.

The move comes on the heels of reports that the company had halted sales of its flagship product in 10 markets, after several incidences of the phones igniting while charging.

Samsung had sold 2.5 million units of the premium devices before the sales stoppage. Samsung Malaysia Electronics said it is currently conducting a thorough inspection with its supplier to assess its devices’ batteries.

“Samsung is committed to producing the highest quality products and we take every incident report from our valued customers very seriously. In response to recently reported cases of the new Galaxy Note 7, we conducted a thorough investigation and found a battery cell issue.

“To date (as of September 1) there have been 35 cases reported globally, and we are currently conducting a thorough inspection with our suppliers to identify possible affected batteries in the market.

“However, because our customers’ safety is an absolute priority at Samsung, we have stopped sales of the Galaxy Note 7,” read the statement.

The company acknowledged the inconvenience this may cause in the market.

“(The move) is to ensure that Samsung continues to deliver the highest quality products to our customers. We will work to ensure the replacement experience is as convenient and efficient as possible.”
