Zika in Miri: No other residents test positive for virus

KUCHING: A total of 156 people living within a 200-metre radius from a Zika patient's house in Miri have been screened, with none displaying signs and symptoms of the infection.

State Local Government Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said the Health Ministry had screened residents living nearby, included six family members living in the same house.

All the family members showed no signs and symptoms of Zika infection.

The infected patient, a 35-year-old pregnant woman, is Sarawak’s first reported Zika case. She was admitted to the hospital on Sunday.

The woman is in her 10th week of pregnancy.

“She is doing well so far, and in stable condition with close monitoring by the hospital," Dr Sim said.

He said local councils will also intensify their efforts to clear mosquito breeding grounds by fogging.

Dr Sim also advised the public, especially pregnant women, to protect themselves using repellent or wear light-coloured clothing to ward off mosquitoes.

Aerosol spray, he said, can be applied during the mosquitoes’ active hours between 5am to 7am and 5pm to 7pm.
