Two detained in Klang Valley, one to be arrested in Ipoh, for social media remarks on Haron Din

KUALA LUMPUR: Police arrested two men in the Klang Valley today for making insensitive remarks on the passing of Pas spiritual leader Datuk Dr Haron Din.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the suspects had posted insensitive comments on Haron Din on their social media accounts.

"One of was arrested at Bandar Utama and the other in Shah Alam, Selangor," Khalid said, adding that police are planning the arrest of a third person in Ipoh for his social media comments.

Khalid said initial investigations revealed that the trio made their remarks in the wake of an insensitive tweet posted by Jelutong Member of Parliament, Jeff Ooi.

"Their comments have offended Muslims in the country," said Khalid, describing Jeff as a 'mulut gatal' (catty).

Ooi's controversial tweet had read: "Adios Harun Din. Let there be peace."

The two men, aged between 50 and 60, are being investigated under section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998, while Ooi is being investigated under Section 298 of the Penal Code.

Haron, 76, died at 10.10am on Friday (Malaysian time) at Stanford University Hospital in San Francisco, due to heart complications.

On the matter of Bersih 5.0, which is expected to be held on Nov 19, Khalid said police plan to take a statement from the organiser, Maria Chin Abdullah, soon.

"We will investigate her under Section 124C of the Penal Code for activity detrimental to parliamentary democracy," he added.
