Allegedly toxic Australian honey product probed by Health Ministry

KOTA TINGGI: Claims that the products of an Australian honey manufacturer are poisonous for consumption are being looked into by the Health Ministry.

Its minister Datuk S. Subramaniam said they are aware of the allegations and have instructed the Ministry’s Food Safety Unit to run a test on the products to determine their toxicity levels.

He said results of the test could be known as early as next week.

"If the results confirm the veracity of the claims, we will stop the import of the products into the country, or place a ban on their sale here," he said.

Subramaniam said imported food must adhere to certain standards of food preparation and production guidelines, and should follow what is permitted by the Malaysian government.

Subramaniam was speaking at the national-level Combi (Communication for Behavioural Impact) Convention 2016 at the Lotus Desaru Beach Resort, which was attended by more than 2,000 representatives.
