KL man arrested for Facebook post insulting Johor royal family, sent to JB for remand

JOHOR BARU: Johor police have arrested a 25 year-old man in Kuala Lumpur for allegedly posting an insulting comment on Facebook against a member of the Johor royal family.

Johor police chief Datuk Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said police will show no mercy despite the fact that the Facebook user had later apologised for the post.

Wan Ahmad told a Press conference after the state police monthly assembly here today that the man, originally from Batu Gajah, Perak, was arrested in Kuala Lumpur today and will be brought to Johor Baru later today to be remanded.

"It does not matter if the comment was made against the royal family or anyone else, as long as a police report is lodged, we (police) will investigate," he said, adding that the offence was being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

On a separate matter, Wan Ahmad said enforcement officers from local municipal councils have the protection of police during illegal gambling raids.

"Police will go all-out against operators of gambling dens who have threatened enforcement officers when they call on them to conduct checks.

"Some have received threats through phone calls. Police will support these civil servants who are only doing their jobs. We have declared war against these gambling dens," he said.

Since the beginning of the year till Sept 24, police have carried out 482 raids and arrested 1,843 individuals.

A total of 3,981 gambling machines have been seized from illegal gambling outlets, along with cash amounting to RM143,697. A total of 142 cases have been brought to court so far.

In yet another matter, Wan Ahmad said preliminary investigations revealed that the BMW 525i belonging to Johor Baru Umno division vice-chief Datuk Yahya Jaafar, which was destroyed in a fire at his home yesterday, was not due to arson.

However, the case is still being investigated.
