Altantuya's family appoint private firm to serve court papers on Sirul

KUALA LUMPUR: The family of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu have appointed a private process server firm in Sydney to serve court papers on her convicted murderer, who had fled to Australia.

The family's lawyer Ramkarpal Singh today said that they had engaged the company due to the Foreign Ministry's purported failure to serve the documents on former police commando Sirul Azhar Umar.

It was reported that the family had relied on the ministry to serve the court papers on Sirul, who is currently being detained at the Villawood Immigration Detention Centre in Australia.

In January last year, Sirul was detained by the Australian Immigration authorities after fleeing the country while on bail.

“We hope the said documents will be served by the next case management date," said Ramkarpal when contacted after he attended case management of the suit at the Shah Alam High Court today.

The suit would come up for further case management at the same court on Oct 26.

On June 4, 2007, the deceased's family had filed the RM100 million lawsuit against Sirul, former police commando Azilah Hadri, political analyst Abdul Razak Abdullah Baginda, and the government.

The plaintiffs were Altantuya's father Shaariibuu Setev and mother Altantsetseg Sanjaa, and her brothers Mungunshagai Bayarjargal and Altanshagai Munkhtulga.

On Jan 13 last year, the Federal Court convicted Sirul, 45, and Azilah, 40, and sentenced them to death over Altantuya's 2006 murder. However, Sirul was absent during the apex court sentencing as he had already gone to Australia.
