Man and wife found dead, believed due to inhaling gas

BUKIT MERTAJAM: The remains of a husband and wife were found inside a house in Taman Machang Bubok here this evening.

The couple's remains were discovered after neighbours complained of a foul stench emanating from the house.

A neighbour, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the couple had been renting the house for the past three years.

The neighbour said the 51-year-old man and his 35-year-old wife always kept to themselves and hardly spoke to their neighbours.

Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said police are still awaiting the forensic report.

He said initial investigation suggested that the couple died after inhaling two tanks of gas, with the door to the room they were found in plastered from inside.

"When we managed to open the room door, we found the two remains with traces of blood.

"The door was also plastered with cellophane tape while the windows were covered with plastic bags," he added.

Nik Ros Azhan said neighbours last saw the couple five days ago.

"We are trying to track down their next-of-kin," he added.

The remains have been sent to the hospital and a post-mortem will be conducted tomorrow.

Police have classified the case as sudden death for now.
