Three Perlis RTD officers charged with receiving bribes from lorry driver

KANGAR: Three Perlis Road Transport Department officers claimed trial at the Sessions Court here today to receiving bribes last year.

Sahrill Saadan, 36, was accused of have received a RM200 bribe from one Azahar Ahmad as an inducement not to take action against the latter for driving a lorry overloaded with goods.

The vehicle inspector allegedly committed the offence near Jalan Kaki Bukit heading to Jalan Wang Kelian in Padang Besar at 5.52pm on October 14.

The second accused, Yusri Yusof, allegedly received a RM100 bribe from the same lorry driver near Jalan Kurong Batang heading to Jalan Sungai Batu Pahat at 2.07pm on October 13.

The 48-year-old assistant enforcement officer was accused of having received the said amount as an inducement not to take action against the lorry driver for driving the vehicle overloaded with goods.

The duo were charged under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 (Act 694) which is punishable under Section 24 (1) of the same Act.

In the same court, another assistant enforcement officer, Ahmad Azman Mohamed, was alleged to have solicited RM200, also from the same lorry driver, as an inducement not to take action against the latter for driving a lorry with overloaded cargo.

The 43-year-old accused allegedly committed the offence near Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) main campus at Kuala Perlis-Changloon expressway at 11.35am on October 28.

He was charged under Section 21(b) of the MACC Act 2009 which is punishable under Section 24 (1) of the same Act.

Judge Azman Abu Hassan set bail at RM2,000 with one surety for each of the accused who were separately charged.

He fixed November 2 for mention pending the handing over of documents and for the accused to engage their lawyers.
