Sixteen cases linked to rotavirus infection reported in Perak

IPOH: Sixteen acute gastroenteritis cases have been reported in Perak, related to the rotavirus infection that allegedly began at a water park in Bukit Merah recently.

Perak Health Department deputy director (public health) Dr B. Venugopalan said that as of yesterday, a total of 30 cases were recorded nationwide.

He said Perak recorded the highest number of cases, followed by Kedah (11) and Penang (3).

He said the victims, aged from eight-months-old to 53-years-old, were in stable condition.

"Twenty-six of them are below 10-years-old. All water activities at the resort are still closed until further notice," he said here today.

He said he cleaning process also begun today and it will take a few days, depending on the types of cleaning required.

Yesterday, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said the Perak State Health Department had ordered the temporary closure of the water park after nine cases of rotavirus infection traced to the recreational park were reported.

He said the closure is to allow investigations to be carried out on the water quality of the recreational park after nine cases were reported in Kedah and Penang as of yesterday.
