Msian students abroad urged to register with embassies, consulates

SEREMBAN: Malaysian students pursuing their studies abroad are advised to register with Malaysian embassies or Consulates General upon arrival to facilitate providing them with necessary assistance in case of emergency.

Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican said although students are not obligated to register, doing so would help Wisma Putra extend aid to them in times of need.

"At the moment, we have no plans to make it compulsory. But we want students who are studying abroad to be aware of the importance of registering their arrival at our embassies/consulates.

"Their records will be useful for Wisma Putra to monitor their wellbeing in the country, besides extending aid, especially in cases of natural disaster and crisis," he said at a press conference after the Persatuan Seni Silat Cekak Malaysia (PSSCM) ceremonial award held here today.

Also present was PSSCM president, Datuk Maideen Kadir Shah.
