Bersih 5.0 convoy moved through Johor under police's watchful eye

JOHOR BARU: Johor police kept a close watch on the Bersih 5.0 convoy which moved from Johor Baru to Kulai today.

Johor police chief Datuk Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said police closely monitored the movement of participants who made 13 stops between the two towns.

Najmuddin said police were provided the group’s itinerary, which ended with their last stop at 6.30pm in Kulai.

"We were closely monitoring them. Had any of them broken the law or caused a public disturbance or even obstructed traffic during their convoy, we would not have hesitated to take action against them," he said when contacted.

Najmuddin said although the group had submitted a notice to hold the convoy and gathering last week, the participants were still bound by the provisions under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

"We will still check to see if any of the provisions were violated," he said, adding that the situation was under control the entire time.

The rally, which started at around 10am this morning, attracted about 300 people clad in Bersih 5.0 yellow t-shirts who gathered in front of the Johor Baru City Council office.

Bersih 5.0 Southern region vice chairman Ong Lai Mun reminded rally-goers not to provoke or retaliate to any provocation from anyone, and to hold the rally in peace so they would not have an issue with the police.

Also present were former Bersih 2.0 chairperson Datuk S. Ambiga.
