Seven Indonesian women saved from sex slavery in Penang

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police rescued seven Indonesian women allegedly forced into sex slavery during a raid at a guest house in Jalan Pasar here yesterday.

Seberang Perai Tengah police chief ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said a 29-year-old man, believed to be the caretaker of the premises, was detained in the 5pm raid.

“The women, aged between 23 and 31, were found in some of the rooms. They were believed to have been forced to work there as prostitutes,” he said here today.

Nik Ros Azhan said the case was being investigated under Section 12 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007.

The man would be remanded for five days to facilitate investigations, he added.

Meanwhile, a body of a woman was found at a mangrove swamp in Sungai Perai, Butterworth near here yesterday.

A man who was looking for fishing worms, stumbled upon the victim, who was in her 20s.

Nik Ros Azhan said the unidentified woman was believed to have died more than a week ago.

He said the body was sent to the Seberang Jaya Hospital.--BERNAMA
