Authorities urge caution as Typhoon Sarika skirts East Malaysia

KOTA KINABALU: Fishermen and sailors are advised to take precautions against Typhoon Sarika as the storm passes over waters off East Malaysia.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department has calculated the distance between the typhoon and the nearest town – Kudat, Sabah – as being approximately 1,434km (to the northwest).

According to an advisory issued by the department, the storm is moving west-north-westward at a speed of 15 km/h.

“This may generate strong winds of 40 to 50 km/h and waves of up to 3.5 metres in waters off Sabah, Labuan FT and Sarawak,” said the department.

It was reported that Typhoon Sarika led to two deaths over the weekend when it passed over the northern Philippines.
