Remand extension for 4, the Sabah Water Department corruption scandal continues

KOTA KINABALU: Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has obtained remand extension on four individuals to facilitate the on-going probe into the Sabah Water Department’s corruption scandal.

An engineer and two assistant engineers attached to the Tawau district water department and the engineer from the Lahad Datu district water department will be remanded for another five days, beginning today.

They were among 19 individuals arrested on Wednesday during the MACC phase two operation, which focused on 27 locations across the state.

MACC deputy chief commissioner (operation) Datuk Azam Baki confirmed the arrest but declined to elaborate.

On Thursday, MACC arrested three technicians. All suspects nabbed in the second wave of operations were remanded between four and seven days.

An MACC source said thus far the commission had seized RM7.2 million in cash from the recent arrests.

In the first phase operation on Oct 4, MACC arrested two senior figures within the department and two others on suspicion of monopolising government projects to rake in millions from the RM3.3 billion worth of federal funded projects to boost clean water supply in Sabah.

Following their arrest, MACC also picked up a former top senior officer of the department on Oct 14.

Of the five suspects, one was released last Sunday while the rest was released from remand early this week.
