Genting Highlands expansion won't involve casino space

GENTING Malaysia Bhd’s RM10 billion tourism plan for its iconic highlands resort will not involve any space expansion for casino operations, said chairman and chief executive Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay.

“We would start to ‘soft open’ part of it at the end of this year, and progressively roll everything out next year. There will be a new gaming venue but no expansion.”

The Genting Integrated Tourism Plan (GITP) is a 10-year master plan launched in December 2013 to redevelop Resorts World Genting.

Lim said while the total area for gaming will not increase, this does not necessarily mean no additional facilities.

“We will see. If you can fit more tables into the same space, why not?”

Among the GITP highlights include the RM2 billion Twentieth Century Fox World theme park, the Sky Avenue shopping mall and Genting Premium Outlets as well as increased theme park rides.

The expansion will create 7,000 new jobs at the resort, as well as require new power sub-stations and water treatment plants to cater for future growth.

Phase 2 will see the construction of more luxury hotels as well as a show arena with a seating capacity of up to 10,000.

Genting clarifies:

We refer to the article which appeared in the New Straits Times (Mon, Oct 24 2016), BT - page B2 under the heading ‘Genting Highlands expansion won’t involve casino space.’

We would like to hereby clarify the statement made by our chairman and chief executive Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay.

What he said in his interview was that there will be a new gaming venue. This means the new gaming venue will involve new gaming and food & beverage space. But there will be no net increase of gaming space under the Phase 1 of GITP development as some of the current gaming space will be closed.
