USM's convocation ceremony commences, almost 6,000 to receive scrolls

GEORGE TOWN: A total of 276 Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) graduates received their scrolls during the first session of the university's 54th convocation this morning.

Raja Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail, who is the chancellor of USM, presented the scrolls to the graduates.

Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin also bestowed an honourable doctorate in engineering award to Toray Industries Inc. chief operating officer Datuk Akihiro Nikkaku, 67 and the Chancellor's Gold Medal award to student Lim Yen Ruen, 23.

Among the recipients of the scrolls was Bukit Aman narcotic investigation assistant director assistant commissioner S. Batumalai.

A total of 5,941 graduates will receive their scrolls during the eight sessions of the four-day convocation, starting today.
