(UPDATED) Petronas confirms deadly explosion at Johor Baru petrol station

JOHOR BAHRU: A petrol station worker was killed when an explosion occurred at a Petronas station in Austin Perdana, Johor Baru this afternoon.

Mohd Faizal Mazlan, 33, a worker at the station, died after a Natural Gas Vehicle (NGV) is believed to have exploded.

The incident occurred at 3.15pm.

Faizal’s remains were sent to the Sultan Ismail Hospital. The Fire and Rescue Department are investigating the incident.

Meanwhile, in an immediate response, Petronas Dagangan Bhd (PDB) confirmed the incident.

It said, initial findings showed that the explosion occurred at the station’s NGV compressor facility during maintenance work.

“An emergency response team was immediately mobilised and is working closely with relevant authorities. The incident is now contained,” said the company in a brief statement.

PDB also confirmed that an employee of its contractor died in the incident.

“PDB would like to extend its sincere condolences to the family of the victim,” it said.

The company said it is currently investigating the impact and cause of the incident.
