KUALA LUMPUR: Shoppers at the Pandan Kapital shopping mall were stunned when an escalator within the complex exploded at noon today.
The escalator, linking the lower ground floor to a floor above, is believed to have blown up following a technical glitch.
By a stroke of luck, no shoppers were on the escalator during the incident. No injuries were reported.
A spokesman for the mall management said they would not be lodging a police report but said it would conduct an internal investigation.
The management however did alert the Fire and Rescue Department. It is understood that the mall’s technicians are currently assessing the damage, and that repair works are underway.
Images of the damaged escalator were shared among netizens today and immediately went viral.
