Google launches website testing tool

KUALA LUMPUR: Google Malaysia has announced a new resource for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), as well as marketers and regular consumers to measure a website’s performance based on a number of criteria, including desktop and mobile browsing.

According to Google’s Pagespeed Insights, one only needs to visit ‘Test My Site’ and key in the URL that requires analysis to view the website scores. From there, users will be shown a number of factors that influences the score, as well as tips on how to improve the site such as resizing images or minimising Java Security Service (JSS).

Google’s ‘Test My Site’ grades a website’s performance based on the following criteria:

• Mobile-friendliness: The user experience when browsing the website using mobile devices. This is influenced by how small screen-friendly a website is as well as the placement of important web elements.

• Desktop speed: How long it takes for a site to load on desktop computers. It’s not just the strength of your customers’ web connection that determines speed but also the elements present on the site. The heavier the element, the longer the load time becomes.

• Mobile speed: How long it takes for a site to load on mobile devices. Elements that load well on Desktop PCs may not necessarily be good on mobile devices, as it may be too heavy to load.

Managing director of Google Malaysia, Sajith Sivanandan mentioned that micro or small businesses should take advantage of ‘Test My Site’ in order to have better interactions with customers.
