Nurses still traumatised over deadly Sultanah Aminah Hospital blaze

JOHOR BARU: Several nurses may be on the road to recovery at the Sultan Ismail Hospital (HSI), but they are still traumatised by the fire at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA) three days ago that killed six patients in the Intensive Care Unit.

Johor Education, Information and Co-operative Development Executive Committee chairman Datuk Md Jais Sarday said the nurses, especially, needed counselling.

"The family members of the patients have also requested that they be allowed to rest. Too many stories are circulating on social media and in the newspapers.

"The victims feel sad re-living the nightmare again and again. And some stories where victims had to jump out of the window of the hospital for safety, that is on social media sites, are untrue.

"There were firemen below to make sure they landed safely," Md Jais said at the HSI here today.

Md Jais was there to present RM2,000 to each of the five victims on behalf of Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who had wanted to visit the victims personally but was unable to do so on Tuesday.

The Johor Association of State Assemblymen's Wives (Juita), led by its honorary secretary Datin Rozita Kimin, was also with Md Jais.

Rozita said Juita was presenting RM500 to each of the five victims.

"We prefer not to believe all the news that is circulating on social media sites and prefer to come here to visit the patients personally," said Rozita, who was there on behalf of Juita president Datin Seri Rosni Omar.
