Calligraphy art unites two cultures

IPOH: Muhibbah (Good will) was clearly showcased at the University Kuala Lumpur Royal College of Medicine Perak through an art exhibition of Chinese calligraphy and the Malay Jawi.

The exhibition featured artists from the Association of Chinese Calligraphy and the Art of Jawi Calligraphy Association.

The university’s CEO and deputy director Ibrahim Ahmad said the programme was aimed at promoting harmony between the two races through an ancient calligraphy art.

“We want our students to be all-rounders and the art of calligraphy and Jawi will be forgotten if we do not teach them to our youth,” he said.

University students as well as 300 students from two schools, Sekolah Raja Perempuan Taayah and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Ave Maria Convent, were invited to witness the union of the word ‘beautiful’, written in Jawi (cantik) and in Chinese (mei).

Bahirah Munif, 20, a second year student pursuing Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), said that she thoroughly enjoyed the exhibition.

“I am glad that my university offered this art subject so that my generation will know about this ancient way of writing,” she said.

The theme ‘Cantik’ was aptly chosen as the exhibition is indeed a beautiful union of two cultures.
