Red Shirts' Jamal wants shut down of Malaysiakini

PETALING JAYA: Red Shirt movement leader Datuk Jamal Yunos today has demanded that news portal, Malaysiakini be closed down amid accusation of receiving foreign funding.

"Our protest today is to urge the government to take action against Malaysiakini, revoke their permit.

"We are confident over the disclosure linking the news portal to George Soros (a Hungarian-American magnate) and two days ago, during a meeting with the (Malaysiakini's) top management, they admitted to have received funds from Soros," he told reporters outside Malaysiakini's office, off Jalan Tandang, today.

Earlier, he joined some 1,000 of his supporters marching towards the entrance of the news portal. The protesters had gathered nearby since 1pm.

The group however stopped just before a barricade set up by the police and started demanding that its top management to come out of the building.

Two days ago, Jamal, with a small group of his supporters had gathered outside the office, demanding an explanation on reports that the news portal had received funding from the Open Society Foundations, funded by Soros.

On Friday, the news portal's representatives lodged a police report over the threat by Jamal to hold a second protest and threat to "tear down" part of the news portal's office today.
