Najib launches eU@Marketplace for local online entrepreneurs

The programme is a collaboration between Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation Sdn Bhd (MDEC) with seven online business platforms namely Lelong.my, 11street.my, AVANA, EasyStore, AmaxMall, MyBazaar and Shopee.

The latest initiative by MDEC, that began operations in July, is an e-commerce ecosystem which provides a bigger market and interactive business for online entrepreneurs.

In a casual chat session with about 3,000 participants, Najib said e-entrepreneurs now earn handsome incomes, with many of them surpassing those earned by other businessmen and elected representatives.

"E-commerce could help entrepreneurs record significant sales and profit increase of between 40 and 50 per cent annually, compared to between 4 and 5 per cent recorded by those in the conventional businesses," he said when closing the Daya E-Usahawan Conference here.

Present were Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh and MDEC chief executive officer Datuk Yasmin Mahmood.

Najib said Alibaba executive chairman and Internet entrepreneur Jack Ma would also join him to launch the world's first digital free trade zone here in March next year.

Najib said Ma was appointed as the adviser to the Malaysian government on digital economy, during the prime minister’s visit to China recently.

Yasmin said there are about 45,000 online entrepreneurs in the country, with 15,000 of them having recorded a total transaction of about RM30 million to date.
