Perak Sultan exhorts armed forces to enhance capabilities in changing world

KUALA LUMPUR: The military must combine a sense of duty and honour together with multiple intellectual capabilities to fulfil their role effectively.

The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizziddin Shah, said in facing increasing instability and tremendous changes in the world, an educated armed forces, at the national and regional levels, is needed.

"The growing complexity and unpredictability of the global security environment makes this preparedness both more necessary and more challenging than perhaps ever before.

"The role of military education, and the unique combination of skills and abilities that it imparts, is thus also more important than ever," he said in his royal address at the National Defence University Malaysia here today.

Sultan Nazrin also noted that new technology-related threats required significant efforts to be put into cyber defence, adding that the role of information technology (IT) in the operations of terrorist groups is unprecedented.

"Cyberattacks already have the potential to cause devastating impacts across critical infrastructure around the world, including transportation networks and other infrastructure.

"Let us make sure that military education delivered here more than adequately prepares students for their noble task," he said.
