Zahid tells Bersih, Red Shirts to 'stand down' from Saturday rallies

KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has reminded the organisers and participants in the Bersih 5 and Red Shirts illegal rallies this Saturday that stern action would be taken against them if they proceed with their plans.

“The best thing to do now is to stand down, in order to avoid the (anticipated) clashes from happening," he said adding that police would take action based on existing laws.

“I hope participants from both sides will obey the law,” he said.

Zahid, who is also Home Minister, said police would take action against those who involved in both the Bersih 5 and the Red Shirts’ counter-rally.

"When I was wrapping up the Budget speech recently, I already said that action will be taken on both sides, whether they are yellow or red," he said when met at the parliament lobby today.

Zahid said the authorities had deemed both gatherings unlawful and would not hesitate to act against them.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar recently said that police would use tear gas and water cannons if necessary to avoid any ugly incidents from occurring during the Bersih 5 rally this Saturday.

He said police would take measures in accordance with the law against those who commit transgressions during the rally.
