Almost 60 roads in KL to face closures, detours tomorrow due to Bersih rally

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 58 roads at 10 main areas in KL will feature detours tomorrow, due to the Bersih 5 rally.

The roads will be closed from 7am onwards.

This, said KL police chief Datuk Amar Singh, is to prevent clashes between the various groups that are expected to assemble for the rally.

The areas that will be affected include:

• Dataran Maybank Bangsar

• Little India, Brickfields,

• Masjid Negara

• Muzium Negara

• Sogo

• Dataran Merdeka

• Parliament

• Bank Negara

• Jalan Pudu

• PWTC

• Chow Kit

Amar said apart from the Bersih and Red Shirts supporters, police are also expecting the presence of two more groups, the White Shirts and Black Shirts, who are set to conduct demonstrations at the same time and place.

However, when pressed, he declined to elaborate on the identities of the two latter groups.

Amar said the road detours are being done to ensure that traffic is kept under control, given that rally participants will be driving.

"Given that four groups are set to gather at the same time and place, with different understandings, there is a high possibility that there will be altercations if they meet.

"Police have advised all groups not to conduct the rallies but they still want to continue," he said.

Amar advised members of the public to not join any of the rallies. Police, he said, will not hesitate to act against groups that create chaos in the city centre.

He said police will be deploying enough manpower tomorrow to ensure peace and public order.
