APEC's Social Media Lounge, a place for journos to unwind, socialise

LIMA, Peru: The signage at a corner of the sprawling International Media Centre (IMC) here says "Social Media Lounge".

But could it be a loss in translation and should not mean to be an exclusive place for social media personnel to hang out? Is it meant to be a lounge where all the media practitioners take a break from the thick of action covering APEC leaders and corporate figures' proceedings?

Regardless the meaning, the lounge turns out to be a special place where all the media practitioners, be it conventional or new, head for to unwind and socialise.

The lounge elicits scores of journalists wanting to try their hands on gaming consoles such as Playstation and Nintendo, or simply to relax or take a nap on the many plush sofas there.

There are also videos looping on two big screens to promote Peru's top tourist attractions and destinations. In case the journalists cannot go to the lovely places such as that famous Incan citadel Machu Picchu, the least the host country can do is to bring the places to them electronically.

Roughly 3,500 journalists and technical staff from 21 APEC member economies signed up for accreditation at the IMC ahead of the culminating week of Peru hosting its second APEC meeting since the last one in 2008.
