Sweet relief: No rise in sugar prices, says ministry

KUALA LUMPUR: Domestic Trade Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said although players in the industry had since two months ago asked for the ceiling price of the controlled commodity to be increased, the government had decided against it.

Hamzah said in engagements with millers, they were told that Putrajaya had taken into consideration fluctuating prices in setting the ceiling price of sugar.

"Until there are indications that they could lose if prices are not increased, we will not revisit the matter," he said during an interview with newspapers under the Media Prima stable today.

A kilogramme of sugar is currently priced under RM2.84.

The ceiling price was last revised in 2013 from RM2.50 per kg.
