Zahid urges action against Myanmar junta by International Court of Justice

KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has urged the International Court of Justice to take action against the Myanmar junta for atrocities committed against the Rohingya in Rakhine state.

"This is not about meddling in Myanmar's internal matters. This is about humanity, (and the campaign) should involve participation not only from Malaysia, but the rest of the world.

"Today, (we Malaysians) have put aside our differences. We are here to show the rest of the world our undivided support for the Rohingya," he said.

Zahid added that Malaysia will not change its stance on the matter and will continue to support the Rohingya.

Meanwhile, Pas president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said international intervention was needed to address the persecution faced by the Muslim minority group.

"The government must work with other countries to defend the fate of the Rohingyas and other ethnic groups in Myanmar," he said.

Addressing thousands of people who turned up for the Rohingya Solidarity gathering at the Titiwangsa Stadium, Hadi said Malaysians, including political leaders have put aside their political differences to show their concern over the atrocities committed against the Rohingya people in Rakhine state.

"We are here today to defend Islam and human rights. We must do what we can as a nation to help them (Rohingyas)." he added.
