Najib exhorts Indonesian president to protest against Rohingya injustice

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today urged Indonesian President Joko Widodo to protest against the massacre of the Rohingya in Myanmar.

In his speech at the "Himpunan Solidariti Ummah untuk Rohingya" at Titiwangsa Stadium, Najib said Indonesia should take a stand on the issue.

"Don't just protest against (Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama over the alleged blasphemy issue). Just like Malaysians have gathered today to show our solidarity with the Rohingya, President Jokowi should do the same.

"We have to continue to fight for this. We need to show that we condemn this violence, where the Rohingya are killed, raped, beaten up and burned alive," he said.

Najib also urged the United Nations (UN) and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to take action and address the ongoing violence.

"OIC, please don't just observe. Take action. Please do something. The world can't just sit by and watch the genocide taking place.

"The world can't say 'look it's not our problem'. Millions have died in Bosnia and Rwanda because the world just watched and acted too late.

"This time, we are not willing to wait. We will continue to put pressure, because this is an insult to Islam and our patience is being tested," he stressed.

In addressing the 10,000-strong crowd today, the prime minister also revealed that he had a conversation with the State Counsellor of Myanmar, Nobel Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, when he called to arrange for a meeting to address the issue.

"She said if I want to see her on a bilateral matter, I am welcome.

“But she said she is not willing to see me if I want to discuss the Rohingya issue," Najib added.
