KUANTAN: Marine police seized 200 cartons of contraband cigarettes worth RM40,000 during an inspection at Jalan Wong Ah Jang here yesterday.
Region Three Marine police commander Assistant Commissioner Police Zulkafli Sariaat said the inspection was carried out following a tip-off on smuggling and distribution of contraband cigarettes along Kuantan’s coastal area.
“A 56-year-old man, who was driving a Proton Saga, was stopped by the police. Further inspection by the team found several plastic bags and boxes containing cigarettes from various brands
“Among the brands were U2 Menthol, U2 Full Flavour, John, John White, League Ice, Gudang Garam Surya, Gudang Garam Nusantara Menthol Mild and L.A.
“The car and all contraband cigarettes were seized, while the man was detained to assist with the investigation under the Customs Act 1967,” Zulkafli said in a statement today.
