(Badminton) Chong Wei gets knocked out of World Super Series finals

KUALA LUMPUR: There will be no fifth World Super Series Finals for World No 1 Lee Chong Wei who crashed out on Friday after losing his final Group B tie to Denmark's Viktor Axelsen.

The Malaysian 34-year-old shuttler suffered his second defeat this week when he went down 14-21, 21-14, 21-19 to Axelsen at the Hamdan Sports Complex in Dubai.

Chong Wei's first defeat was in the hands of South Korea's Son Wan Ho in the first group match on Wednesday.

The South Korean, who won all his matches advanced to the last four stage as group winner followed by second placed Axelsen.

The other two shuttlers from Group A are Tian Houwei and another Dane Jan Jorgensen.

In the final women's doubles Group B tie, national No 1 Vivian Hoo Kah Mun-Woon Khe Wei lost 21-17, 21-18 to China's Chen Qingchen-Jia Yifan.

Vivian-Khe Wei, were already out of contention for the semi-finals after suffering two defeats to Denmark's Kamilla Rytter Juhl-Christinna Pedersen and South Korea's Jung Kyung Eun-Shin Seung Chan on Wednesday and Thursday respectively.

Hopes now lie on men's doubles Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong who wrapped up their Group B fixture with a 16-21, 21-13, 22-20 win over China's Chai Biao-Hong Wei.

The Malaysians, who had already booked a semi-final berth topped the group with three wins followed by Chai Biao-Hong Wei.
