Najib arrives in Sarawak to officiate Batang Sadong bridge, view Pan Borneo Highway progress

KUCHING: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has arrived in Sarawak for his whirlwind tour of the state.

Najib arrived at the Kuching International Airport here at 10.30pm.

On hand to welcome Najib upon his arrival were Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, Deputy Home Minister Masir Kujat, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Abang Johari Openg and the latter's entourage from the state government.

Tomorrow (Sunday), the prime minister is scheduled to attend the official opening ceremony of the Batang Sadong bridge in Asajaya about 50km from here.

The bridge, costing RM211 million and touted to be the longest bridge across a river in Malaysia, was one of the "Aku Janji" (pledges) made by Najib to improve the livelihood and stimulate growth for Sarawak.

Also present were Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadilah Yusof and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, who is also Batang Sadong Member of Parliament.

Fadilah is expected to brief Najib on the construction and completion of the bridge during the ceremony.

Najib will later fly to Miri where he is expected to launch the remaining eight work packages for the construction of the multi billion ringgit Pan Borneo Highway project.

There are a total of 11 work packages to construct and upgrading of 1,098km routes for the RM17 billion project in Sarawak.

The following day (Monday), Najib will leave Miri for Sabah to launch the Pan Borneo Highway Sabah-Lahad Datu.
