Social media abuzz as 'tough as nails' biker catches burglar in the act

KUALA LUMPUR: A burglar that entered a home in a gated community in Cheras and locked himself in a room was apprehended by a good Samaritan today.

With his trademark long locks, leather jacket and penchant for café racers, 43-year-old Tunku Ariff Tunku Ulin, better known as Bro Ayip, is no stranger to the local motorcycle enthusiast’s community, and is also minor celebrity at bike events.

Today however, he set social media alight with his account of how he managed to capture a would-be-burglar, right in his neighbourhood.

The biker managed to tie the burglar up before handing him over to the police, unharmed.

Relating the incident to NST Online, Ayip said the incident occurred at 10.45am today in his neighbourhood in Cheras Utama.

Ayip said the burglar had walked past the guardhouse and managed to enter his neighbour’s home.

The 11-year old daughter of his neighbour bumped into the burglar in the house, escaped and ran to the guardhouse to seek help.

Ayip and the guard entered the house and searched from room to room for the burglar.

“One of the doors was locked, and I shouted for the intruder to come out. He opened the door slightly, but then slammed it shut again,” said Ayip.

Ayip said he kicked the door several times to break inside, and finally managed to enter, with the aid of the security guard.

Once inside, he caught the burglar and subdued him by pinning him down on a mattress.

“It’s a good thing he (the burglar) gave in. If he had put up a fight, I’m not sure how he’d fare,” he said.

Ayip maintained that he wasn’t trying to be a hero.

“It’s just part of being a responsible neighbour. I wasn’t angry and I didn’t hurt him,” he told his followers on social media, adding that he even gave the burglar a drink while waiting for the police to show up.

“Even my neighbour chided me for being so kind,” he joked.

However, Ayip was adamant that criminals when caught, should be dealt with properly and within the limits of the law, and should not be physically assaulted.

“We should not go beyond the limits of the law. In cases like this, let the police decide on the next step,” he said.

He added he posted the incident to raise awareness on the need for safety, as well as underscore the need to become good neighbours and to be a part of a community.
