Stay away from beach area during high tides, Kg Tanjung Gelam villagers told

KUALA NERUS: Residents staying near the Tanjung Gelam beach have been advised to exercise caution following high waves that struck the area last night causing severe erosion to the surrounding seaside.

State Civil Defence Force director Lt. Colonel Adam A Rahman said villagers and the public should stay away from the beach as it was dangerous.

"We have stationed for men at the area to monitor the situation and prevent any untoward incident," he said.

Last night, residents and curious onlookers gathered along the beach to witness the erosion taking place after high waves hit the area.

The state government yesterday announced an immediate allocation of RM1.2 million to overcome the serious beach erosion problem at Tanjung Gelam.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abd Rahman said this was for a short-term solution to minimise the effects of erosion caused by big sea waves along the beach area.

"We already have an allocation of RM40 million from the federal government for a long-term solution, but this is still being studied including the design for a suitable wave breaker to prevent future erosion along the beach." he was quoted as saying.

He said the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) has suggested that two stretches of wave breaker be built at Tanjung Gelam beach.
