New chairman takes reins of Malaysian Timber Council

KUALA LUMPUR: Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong has announced the appointment of Datuk Gooi Hoe Hin as chairman of the Malaysian Timber Council (MTC) effective tomorrow, Jan 1, 2017 until Dec 31, 2018.

Gooi, 64, holds a Bachelor of Economics (Hons) from Universiti Malaya and served in the ministry when it was known as the Ministry of Primary Industries.

He has held various posts and was instrumental in developing the timber industry, including the formulation of the nation’s policy on issues related to the export of timber products, as well as addressing issues of market access for tropical timber.

Gooi also played a pivotal role in the establishment of a number of agencies while with the ministry, including the MTC.

“I believe Gooi’s experience, knowledge and credibility will enable him to carry out his (duties) effectively and strengthen the nation's timber industry.

“At the same time, I would like to express (my) appreciation and gratitude to (outgoing) MTC chairman, Datuk Wee Jeck Seng, for his dedication and contribution to the MTC and the ministry during his tenure from Jan 1, 2015 till (today),” Mah said.
