Dismal New Year for Terengganu as more than 3,000 flood victims evacuated

KUALA TERENGGANU: More people were evacuated as the number of flood victims in Terengganu rose to 3,392 people from 993 families tonight.

The state Welfare Department flood watch online portal stated that as of 10.30pm, all the victims were moved to 43 relief centres.

Earlier, the portal reported that in Hulu Terengganu, 1,055 people from 344 families were evacuated to 15 relief centres, with a total of 21 relief centres accommodating 1,936 people from 666 families.

In Marang, 495 people from 99 families were seeking shelter in eight relief centres compared to 280 people from 67 families, who were at six relief centres before.

In Setiu, 217 victims from 56 families were housed at four relief centres compared to 234 people from 68 families at three relief centres.

The portal said 380 people from 84 families were evacuated to three relief centres compared to 294 people from 63 families at the same centres.

In Besut, five relief centres were opened to house 282 people from 69 families, compared to 93 people from 26 families earlier in the day.

In Dungun, two relief centres were opened to accommodate 82 people of 19 families (earlier 75 people from 18 families).

Meanwhile, the floods have also forced the closure of eight roads in the state. State Civil Defence Force director Che Adam said that in Hulu Terengganu, four roads were closed to all traffic at 10am after floodwaters rose to 0.5 metres, with a portion of Jalan Bukit Perah-Kuala Kejir at Kampung Jak being closed to light vehicles.

The other flooded roads are Jalan Aring-Kuala Jeneris at Kampung Basung (0.5 metres); Jalan Tapah at Kampung Kepah (0.5 metres); Jalan Matang-Kuala Telemong at Kampung Nibong (0.7 metres); and Jalan Kuala Pueh-Tapah-Payang Kayu-Baung-Kuala Ping (0.8 metres).

Che Adam also said that in the Setiu district, two roads were closed to light vehicles.

He said Jalan Pengkalan Merbau-Pelong near Kampung Pelong Kepah was submerged at a depth of 0.8-metres, while Jalan Chalok Bukit Putera-Telaga Papan near Kampung Lubuk Panjang was flooded at a depth of 0.6 metres and was closed at 11am.
